Gilbert and George

Yesterday I checked out the Gilbert and George exhibit at the DeYoung. I had pretty mixed feelings about their exhibit. I found many of the pieces that they had done in the 80s and early 90s to be interesting, but all of the new works to be terrible. They lost the avant-garde edge somewhere along the way, and are just riding the coat tails of their former success. Their use of photos, scale, framing, and color is awesome though. They have a pop/postmodern mix where I think I like the pop side, but not the postmodern. Giant nude portraits framed with poop to me is just being extreme for shock value, and not because there is a really good concept. It was interesting, but not my favorite. These are both from the 80s (before they lost it):

Annie Leibovitz

I saw the Annie Leibovitz show at the Legion of Honor the other day. It was organized and layed out really well. Leibovitz is considered to be one of the best portrait photographers, so I think that is valuable to consider some of the elements that make her work strong. I love how she became famous for shooting rockstars for Rolling Stone Magazine, but maneuvered her way into shooting the likes of US Presidents, and the Queen. These photos were both at the show.

Bryna Nicole Handbags

I shot these bags a maybe a month ago with my friend Mark. It was really fun for me because I don't normally shoot products. It's alway fun to mix it up a little, and do something different. I like how the photos look, but these bags are REALLY cool! They have amazing construction, and an attention to detail that I can get behind. I'm not going to lie though, they are a little spendy. However, if you want an amazing designer purse or clutch that is not covered with excessive branding (like Louis Vuitton), check out Bryna Nicole's stuff. I love people who buy things that are nice because they like them, not because they need a status symbol.

Rilo Kiley

I was super stoked to see Rilo Kiley at the SF Design Center last night. They were awesome! Rilo Kiley is one of those bands that I've been wanting to see for a while, and it just never worked out, but last night was really cool. The opening band was also cool too - Wispertown 2000. My phone didn't pull any cool pics this time, sorry. Stock photo:

Art Installation

I was in a group that put up this temporary art installation at SFSU in one of the hallways of the art department building. It was intended to warm up the hallway for the potential incoming freshmen that have been checking out SFSU. Public art is cool because it changes an existing space and transforms it into something different. I love the work of Christo and Jeanne Claude, who are masters of temporary installations.
Our streamers totally changed the color of the lights, making all of the light in the hallway really warm. It was cool to look up and walk through this normally dull hallway.

Grandpa Roy

My Grandpa Roy died this weekend while visiting some relatives in Japan with my Grandma. I'm super bummed out. I will miss him a lot. He had so many awesome stories, and was such a good person. I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend time with him growing up. I think death is for sure the hardest thing about living.
He used to go golfing everyday, and I'm really glad that I was able to go with him the last time I was down in LA visiting.
This is my Grandpa Roy and my Grandma Yas.

Tim and Emily

I took engagement photos with some friends of mine from Modesto, Tim and Emily. We totally had a blast! The lighting was good, the locations were cool, nice smiles, and lots of jokes. Good times. I've known Tim for a few years now, and it is really exciting to see him with Emily, who is super rad! These first photos are at Golden Gate Park, which is actually pretty big. I have never fully explored it, and I had never been to this part of the park.
I'm not going to lie, it was a little bit cold out, but I was so excited with the shots! We owned babies for sure!

The American Bourbon Band

So, I've been coming down to SB a lot lately, but you know I wouldn't miss my friends' band, The American Bourbon Band for much. They play classic rock cover songs, and they totally rock! It was a blast because most of my friends were there, and it was just good times all around. If you want to see more photos from the show, click here.
The official fan club has at least two members!
TJ is married to my cousin Heidi, and they are expecting their first kid this summer. I'm super excited for them!!
This is Heidi and I. You can't really see the baby bump in this photo, but she's in there.
The band is: Pat, Nels, TJ, Pat, Krysta, and Johnny.
